Unholy
|
|
Uncompromising, mesmerising doom metal from Imatra. At some point guitarist Jarkko Toivonen kicked out his brother Ismo
(guitar, keyboards, violin, etc.) out of the band because he chose to do his military service. "Only a slave is a soldier, and a slave
can't be a member of Unholy", was the official explanation.
From their '93 debut album onwards, it has been evident that Unholy
have set out to seek the harmony in dissonance. It's dead heavy metal frenzy - all about Celtic Frost,
Black Sabbath, psychedelia,
shamanism, mushrooms and gargantuan atmospheres.
After '94's monumental and overlooked "The Second Ring of Power" the band
dissolved, disillusioned, and only re-emerged with one hell of an album in the form of "Rapture" after a two-year break during which
Jarkko had taken off to concentrate on his sonic adventures with Tiermes (more about magic and mind expansion than music,
or metal at any rate). '99's "Gracefallen" laid perhaps a tad too heavily on Veera Muhli's adequate but uneventful female vocals.
Officially disbanded in March '02 after negotiations with a "famous" label went down the drain.
