Thrash with some death influences from Hämeenlinna, sharp riffing and thought-out tracks, but lacking the final "let's kick some arse" mentality.
Changed their name to Wooden Bone and made something softer. I suppose rock music is what you'd call it.

A legend - there simply is no other way to describe this seminal band led by the mighty Kimmo Kuusniemi.
His visions resulted in dark sounds that were to influence a plethora of bands and musicians all around the world
in the years to come - Mercyful Fate and Celtic Frost for instance.
The vocals on the debut album were handled
by Hannu Leiden who later made records with Leroy and Havana Black.
For the second album Kuusniemi recruited a young vocalist called Jukka Homi who later became known as Jay C. Blade
of OZ. After Sarcofagus Kimmo Kuusniemi carried out a project called Moottorilinnut.

Sentenced
|
|
Death metallers (formerly known as Deformity) come melo-metal suicide romantics from Muhos/Oulu.
On their second album "North from Here" they took what were the useful elements of Atheist and Death,
black metal's icy malevolence, the impeccable sense of melody from the finest purveyors of heavy metal
and four northernmost hearts full of hate and angst, and made a modern metal classic.
Its successor "Amok" saw the band go more accessible for some, whereas many old fans found themselves
redefining the concept of "sell-out". Sentenced's transformation into marketable teenage idols only reached
its nadir with new vocalist Ville Laihiala on hit albums such as "Down" and "Frozen" - both of which were like
"Amok" without the attitude and the nuances.
Or maybe more like when you've run out of shampoo and use the non-existent remainder in the bottle for
one more wash.
Vocalist/bass player Taneli Jarva resurfaced in 1998 with his new band The Black League.

Shock Tilt
|
|
Vaasa originated band that is barely known even in Finland as they followed the footsteps of OZ and moved to
Sweden after the release of the debut album in order to expedite their career. At first things seemed to
proceed fine for the band but in early '88 they made the big headlines the way nobody could have expected
or wished.
In late '87 a dismembered corpse stuffed in a suitcase and a couple of plastic bags had been found from a
river in Sweden and in early '88 the police investigations confirmed the murder victim was Hannu Rajala,
the guitar player of Shock Tilt. Further investigations revealed the gruesome truth in its entirety.
The murderer turned out to be the Swedish manager of the band who had been found through a newspaper ad.
Needless to say this shocking event put a halt to the band for a while.

Young band from Kemi playing fast and melodic metal - sometimes so fast and melodic it doesn't sound like metal at all.
In other words Sonata Arctica are suffering from exactly the same weakness as dozens of other
disciples of Stratovarius.
However, their sense of melody is well above average so you better give them a chance if lack of power and heaviness
doesn't bother you that much.
The very first pressing of "Unopened" CDEP contained the music on wrong speed and consequently the record was withdrawn. Record collectors place your bids. Hurry, hurry!
Bidding ends!

Stone
|
|
Capital area speed/power metal, the most influential band in their field in Finland and always head and shoulders
above the others. And their ever-lengthening songs only seemed to add to their popularity.
Stone's debut album was also released in the USA by Mechanix Records (a short-lived sublabel of MCA who also
released VoïVod and Violence) and the band did an American tour supporting Testament.
The folding of Mechanix Records unfortunately brought an end to the conquest of America but the band continued in
Europe until '92. After Stone all band members have continued their career in different bands:
Janne Joutsenniemi (vocals, bass) in Sub-Urban Tribe, Pekka Kasari (drums) in Amorphis, Roope Latvala (guitar)
in Waltari and Sinergy and Nirri (guitar, originally from Airdash) in Corporal Punishment.
Original guitarist Jiri plays in his father's (country/schlager star Kari Tapio) back-up band.

Despite their sometimes silly lyrics Stormwing are one of the best Finnish bands delivering the Scandinavian
brand of hard rock a la Europe. At one point they had things looking bright for them in Japan but instead
of a breakthrough we got to witness a series of peculiar career moves.
First the band recorded a charity single for the victims of the Estonia disaster (on a stormy September night in
1994 the passenger ferry Estonia sank in the Baltic Sea and over 800 people lost their lives)
and many considered this a dubious way for an unknown band to seek publicity.
The next step was joining forces with a guy called Mika Sundqvist and recording sport oriented humour
music sung in Finnish (these records are omitted from the discography for your convenience).
It's totally incomprehensible what the band tried to achieve with this co-operation but it certainly didn't help anybody.

Diluted Helloween, Rainbow and Queensryche moments for less discerning tastes -
guitarist and mastermind Timo Tolkki is your authorized spare parts dealer.
Together with his partner in crime, former Filthy Asses vocalist Timo Kotipelto,
Mr Tolkki is doing his darnedest to convince us that Heavy Metal is really about dolphins.
