Abhorrence
|
|
Finland's first genuine death metal band (along with Funebre). The band, a fivepiece from the capital area folded
before the infamous Seraphic Decay Records managed to put out their debut seven-inch.
Guitarist Tomi Koivusaari soldiered on and formed Amorphis with a few chaps from
Violent Solution and Nuxvomica. During the very last months of Abhorrence's
existence the drums were played by Mikael "Arkki" Arnkil of Antidote and later of Impaled Nazarene fame.

Airdash
|
|
Capital area speed metal characterised by vocalist Junnu's excruciating mannerisms.
Formed in 1986, these eastern Helsinki metallers were always overshadowed by the more popular
Stone, who in fact hijacked 'dash guitarist Nirri for their last two albums.
Other bands known to have featured former Airdash members in their ranks
include Sub-Urban Tribe, Corporal Punishment,
Gandalf, Thy Serpent and Gloomy Grim.

These Kalevala bashers started life as a death metal band borne of the ashes of
Violent Solution, Abhorrence
and Nuxvomica. After having consumed two or three prog rock albums too many the band found themselves
dropping their death metal influences and in need of a versatile vocalist (Kyyria's Ville Tuomi handled the
clear vocals on the successful "Tales from the Thousand Lakes" opus). Before they recruited Pasi Koskinen
(original St. Mucus vocalist/guitarist) they gave some geezer a go at Ankkarock festival - he was more of
the Oulunkylä jazz/pop music academy variety and (un)fortunately the audience decided against him.

Androids
|
|
Sweet hard rock with sugar on top. Originally the Androids were the poppy back-up band of one Johnny Lee Michaels (Jouni Turpeinen) who
can be linked as a producer to the current demise/rise (whatever) of The 69 Eyes, ex-sleaze rockers cum Gothic cock-rock semi-gods from Helsinki.
Lee Michaels was replaced on vocals by Tommy Eriksson who is probably better known amongst prog rock enthusiasts.
In the early '80s he sang in Scarab (whose self-financed album from '83 is one of the most collectable pieces of vinyl
from Finland in the '80s) and these days he's the lead singer of Ageness which can be considered as
some sort of continuation of Scarab.

|
|
Talented female hard rock singer and song writer who got favourable reviews in Kerrang!
Unfortunately the album was hardly distributed outside of Finland so her career never really took off.
The album is without a doubt one of the best Finnish hard rock records ever - not least because of
Annica's great voice. The musicians on the album include heavy metal heroes from bands such as
Zero Nine, Peer Gunt and Jackflash. Later on Annica has lent her vocal talent to some cover bands.

Antidote
|
|
Capital area combo who kept on churning out thrash metal at a time when everybody and their dog
had opted for a more deathlike approach. Didn't exactly big up their credentials in the Next Big Hope stakes
when Finnish death and black metal was enjoying a surprising bout of interest internationally.
It could also be argued that Antidote lacked some in the originality/ferocity/dunno-what-exactly
departments. In the early '90s the band signed a deal with Germany's Shark Records - the label
infamous for first introducing Sepultura to Europeans, without any permission whatsoever.
Drummer Mikael "Arkki" Arnkil currently plays bass for Impaled Nazarene and vocalist/guitarist Nino Laurenne
has a band going called Thunderstone.

Apocalyptica

The title of the debut album reveals the name of the game.
Four metal-loving Sibelius Academy students took their cellos and recorded an album full of
Metallica covers for fun. All of a sudden the name Apocalyptica
was on everyone's lips and more of the same was demanded.
The quartet broadening their repertoire to the likes of Sepultura as well as own compositions followed naturally.

Thrash metal from Kuusamo. Originally the initials stood for Anarchy Rules Games, then Ancient Rotten Graveguards.
At their best they resembled Sodom or Razor with technical aspirations. On the second album drummer
Pasi Takkula's (R.I.P.) shortcomings became painfully evident, but what the man lacked in technical finesse
he more than made up for in the metal mania department. A.R.G. vocalist/bass player Tepa Karjalainen also used to run a fanzine called Epitaph.

Atmospheric doom metal with soaring female vocals is what this sextet led by
vocalist Hanna Kalske and guitarist/songwriter Jukka Sillanpää (Funcunt, Sceptical Schizo, Lavra)
had to offer on their debut album. And pretty much like The Gathering also As Divine Grace
began to opt out of metal in favour of '60s and '70s pop
and the second album became an example of atmospheric non-metal. Pop-meister
Mikko Lappalainen (Sceptical Schizo, Lavra, later Ben's Diapers) joined the band before the second album.
