Tarot
|
|
Finland's top-rated heavy metal group originally hailing from Kuopio. Back
in '86 Kirka helped this group led by the Hietala brothers (Marco on vocals &
bass and Zachary on guitar) to get a deal with the new Flamingo label he
was signed on.
At first the label was mainly interested in Marco Hietala
only as he truly is one of the most remarkable heavy metal vocalists of
our time but eventually the entire band got signed and the dedut album
"Spell of Iron" came out in late '86. The first copies of the album came
with a one-sided bonus 7" including a drum solo called "Aaaargh! What's
goin' on here?!" by Pecu Cinnari. Things started well but after the second
album times weren't the best for traditional heavy metal bands in Finland
and Tarot faded away.
The following years were spent in e.g. making
advertising music and at one point it was rumoured that Marco Hietala was
one of the top candidates to
fill the hole that Bruce Dickinson left in Iron Maiden.
By '93 the band had relocated to the capital area and the long
awaited comeback came in form of "To Live Forever" which took off right
where "Follow Me Into Madness" had left in '88. In the '90s Tarot
finally started to get recognition beyond Finnish borders too but
nothing big was destined to happen.
After '98 it's been fairly quiet in the Tarot
camp again and Marco Hietala has mostly
spent his time playing bass in different groups (e.g. Conquest,
Sinergy, Metal Gods) and recently
he has joined Nightwish. In other words the last few
years have been very very sad times for all of us who are waiting for
Tarot to return and show all the upstarts what real heavy metal is all about.

To/Die/For
|

Originally Mary-Ann or something like that, this is a
hard rock band from Kouvola that Spinefarm Records
worked up into a HIM #2 for less discriminating
consumers. Whereas HIM's opening gambit was a cover
version of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game", To/Die/For
opted for '80s disco hit "In the Heat of the Night", etc.
Drummer Tonmi played in Sinergy for a little while (as
if someone except the two lovebirds had actually
lasted in that band).

Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus
|
|
This quintet fronted by former
Lyijykomppania vocalist Timo Rautiainen has
set new standards for the popularity of heavy rock sung in Finnish. A
genuine chart topper selling similar quantites as, say, Celine Dion. Basically the music
is melodic rock played the heavy way with three disciplined guitars. Not a single
solo has been heard from the band thus far but a rumour says one of the guitarists
had played a solo in the rehearsal room in November 2000. The band remains
close-lipped on the subject. In the early '90s guitarist Jarkko Patosalmi played
in Sacred Crucifix.
